Blog: What is PrEP?

PrEP (Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis) is a method of preventing HIV infection by taking oral medication before being exposed to the virus. It is recommended for individuals at high risk of HIV infection. When taken correctly, PrEP can prevent up to 99% of HIV infections.

PrEP was officially introduced in Australia in 2018, and in Japan in August 2024, following regulatory approval.

What Does PrEP Involve?

PrEP stands for Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis, a preventive approach in which individuals who are not infected with HIV take antiretroviral medication to reduce their risk of acquiring the virus.

The standard medication used for PrEP is a combination of:
Tenofovir Disoproxil 300mg + Emtricitabine 200mg

Purpose of PrEP

PrEP is designed for people at high risk of HIV infection. By taking antiretroviral medication before engaging in activities that may expose them to HIV (e.g., sexual activity), they can effectively prevent infection.

Effectiveness of PrEP

Clinical studies have shown that when taken correctly, PrEP can prevent up to 99% of HIV infections.

Who Can Start PrEP?

PrEP is intended for HIV-negative individuals who are at increased risk of HIV exposure. This includes people who:

  • Have a sexual partner with HIV who is not on effective treatment
  • Are men who have sex with men (MSM)
  • Work in the sex industry

Types of PrEP

There are two main approaches to taking PrEP:

  • Daily PrEP: One tablet is taken once a day.
  • On-Demand PrEP: Multiple tablets are taken around the time of sexual activity:
    • 2 tablets 2 to 24 hours before sex
    • 1 tablet 24 hours after the first dose
    • 1 tablet 48 hours after the first dose (i.e., 24 hours after the second tablet)

PrEP at Our Clinic

We offer PrEP prescriptions at our clinic.
While historically PrEP has been prescribed primarily to men who have sex with men, we are now seeing increasing interest among women working in the sex industry, who are also at risk.

Our medical director, Dr. Nagashima, is licensed to prescribe not only PrEP but also antiretroviral therapy for patients who are already living with HIV.
