Implanon Contraceptive Method

This blog provides information about the Implanon contraceptive method. At our clinic, we perform both Implanon insertion and removal procedures.

Dr Nagashima at our clinic is fully qualified to perform Implanon insertion and removal and has extensive procedural experience.

If you wish to have Implanon inserted or removed, please feel free to contact our clinic.

What is Implanon?

Implanon is a form of Long Acting Reversible Contraception (LARC).

It is a small implant rod measuring 2 mm in diameter and 40 mm in length. It is inserted subdermally into the inner side of the upper arm (usually the left arm).

The insertion point is approximately 8 cm above the medial epicondyle of the humerus (the bony prominence on the inner side of the elbow). The implant is placed under the skin along the lower portion of the biceps muscle, running parallel to the muscle.

The implant continuously releases a stable dose of Etonogestrel, a progesterone hormone, which provides contraceptive protection.

Effectiveness

Compared with other contraceptive methods such as oral contraceptive pills, Implanon is one of the most effective forms of contraception available.

It can be used:

  • During breastfeeding
  • Immediately after pregnancy
  • Immediately after abortion

Duration

Implanon provides effective contraception for up to three years.

After three years, the implant should be removed. If continued contraception is desired, a new implant can be inserted at that time.

Advantages of Implanon

  1. One of the most effective contraceptive methods available.
  2. Once inserted, it works for three years without the need for daily medication or additional procedures.
  3. If pregnancy is desired during the insertion period, removal of the implant allows ovulation to return promptly, with rapid recovery of fertility.

Possible Side Effects

Implanon is generally a low side-effect contraceptive method. However, possible side effects include changes in menstrual bleeding patterns, such as:

  • Reduced bleeding
  • Increased bleeding
  • Less frequent bleeding
  • Irregular bleeding

Use in Australia

Implanon has been available in Australia since 2001 and is widely used.
