Blog: Implanon

This blog introduces the Implanon® contraceptive implant, a highly effective, long-acting method of birth control. At our clinic, we provide both Implanon insertion and removal procedures.

Certified and Experienced Care

Our clinic’s medical director, Dr. Nagashima, is certified to perform both the insertion and removal of the Implanon implant and has extensive clinical experience with the procedure.

If you are considering Implanon insertion or removal, please feel free to contact us for a consultation.

What Is Implanon?

Implanon® is a form of Long-Acting Reversible Contraception (LARC). It is a small, flexible rod (2mm in diameter and 40mm in length) that is inserted just under the skin of the inner upper arm, specifically about 8 cm above the medial epicondyle of the humerus (bony point near the elbow), and runs parallel to the biceps muscle.

The implant continuously releases a stable amount of etonogestrel, a synthetic form of the hormone progesterone, which effectively prevents pregnancy.

Why Choose Implanon?

Implanon is one of the most effective contraceptive options available, with several important advantages:

Benefits of Implanon:

  1. Highest contraceptive efficacy among all methods (>99% effective).
  2. Lasts for 3 years after insertion—no need for daily pills or ongoing treatment.
  3. Fertility returns quickly after removal if you decide to become pregnant.

It is safe for use while breastfeeding, and can be inserted immediately after childbirth or abortion.

Duration & Renewal

  • Implanon is effective for up to 3 years.
  • After 3 years, the implant must be removed, and if desired, a new implant can be inserted during the same visit to continue contraception.

Potential Side Effects

Implanon is generally well tolerated, but some users may experience changes in vaginal bleeding patterns, such as:

  • Heavier or lighter bleeding
  • Irregular bleeding
  • Occasional spotting or extended periods of no bleeding

These effects are typically not dangerous, but can vary between individuals.

Implanon Use in Australia

Implanon has been available in Australia since 2001 and is widely used by people seeking safe, effective, and low-maintenance contraception.
