In Queensland, Australia, the RSV vaccine (Abrysvo®) is recommended for pregnant women. Since 1 December 2024, the Queensland Government has expanded its immunisation program to provide the RSV vaccine free of charge to all pregnant women between 28–36 weeks of gestation, regardless of Medicare status.
By mid-2025, over 57,000 women had received the vaccine, contributing to a reported 75% reduction in infant RSV-related hospitalisations.
1. What is RSV?
- RSV (Respiratory Syncytial Virus) is a common virus that causes bronchiolitis and pneumonia in infants and young children.
- Babies under 6 months of age are especially at risk of severe illness and hospitalisation.
2. Why is RSV vaccination recommended during pregnancy?
- When the RSV vaccine (Abrysvo®) is given between 28 and 36 weeks of pregnancy, the mother’s body produces protective antibodies, which are passed to the baby through the placenta.
- This protects newborns during their first 6 months of life, when they are most vulnerable.
- Studies suggest the vaccine reduces the risk of severe RSV infection in babies by around 70%.
3. Is the vaccine safe?
- The Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) in Australia has approved Abrysvo® for use during pregnancy, confirming its safety and effectiveness.
- Common side effects include soreness at the injection site, headache, or muscle pain, which are generally mild.
4. Timing of Vaccination
- The ideal time for vaccination is between 28 and 32 weeks of pregnancy to allow for optimal transfer of antibodies.
- If birth occurs within 2 weeks after vaccination, antibody transfer may be insufficient. In such cases, a monoclonal antibody (Nirsevimab/Beyfortus) may be recommended for the newborn after birth.
5. Can it be given with other vaccines?
Yes. It is safe to receive Abrysvo® alongside other maternal vaccines, including:
- Whooping cough (dTpa)
- Influenza (seasonal flu)
- COVID-19
6. No Medicare? No Problem.
Even if you do not have a Medicare card, you can still receive the RSV vaccine for free through Queensland’s state-funded immunisation program.
At Skyarch Medical Clinic Brisbane, Abrysvo® is available for eligible pregnant women. Please feel free to contact us for more information or to book an appointment.
